The artist contributes twenty-five thousand pounds cash award to small music venues

Sam Fender received the honor in October in Newcastle

The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

He was awarded the award on mid-October as his third album his work was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots had in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the performances I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

He also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds assisted locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in improving facilities and technical equipment that helped artists and fans.

"The concept that money from concerts in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

Back when they received the prize in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the band would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite divided her award among multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the local youth club that supported their act, alongside other local music groups.

And 1994 winners they gave their prize to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected several small stages in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in that area and the second in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is supported by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
