Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
