Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
